If you’ve built or converted a vehicle to include living accommodations, you may be eligible to register it as a motor home in Montana.

To do so, you must complete the MV95 Motor Home Inspection Certificate, have your vehicle inspected by an authorized officer, and confirm that it meets the definition of a motor home under Montana law.

What qualifies as a “motor home”?

Under Montana Code Annotated § 61-1-101, a motor home is a self-propelled vehicle designed to provide temporary living quarters, either:

  • built as an integral part of the chassis, or

  • permanently attached to a van or other self-propelled vehicle.

The vehicle must contain permanently installed, independent life-support systems that meet the ANSI A119.2 standard and include at least four of the following facilities:

  • ✅ Cooking, refrigerator, or icebox

  • ✅ Potable water supply system (with faucet and sink)

  • ✅ Self-contained toilet

  • ✅ Heating or air conditioning (or both)

  • ✅ 110-volt or 125-volt electrical power supply or liquefied petroleum gas supply (or both)

These systems must be built into the vehicle—portable camping gear does not qualify.

Certifying your vehicle as a motor home

Form MV95 Motor Home Inspection Certificate must be completed and submitted in order for the vehicle to be registered as a motor home.

The form

A blank copy of the form is below:

You’ll need to provide:

  • Your name and address

  • Vehicle information (make, model, color, VIN, GVW)

  • A checklist confirming which facilities your vehicle includes

  • Your certification that the vehicle meets ANSI A119.2 standards

By signing the form, you attest that all statements are true and that you understand the legal implications of misrepresentation under MCA 45-7-203 (Unsworn Falsification to Authorities).

The inspection

The inspection must be performed by a Montana law-enforcement officer or a Montana Department of Justice employee.

They will:

  • Physically inspect the vehicle

  • Verify body and chassis identification numbers

  • Confirm that the listed life-support systems are present and functional

  • Complete and sign the inspector’s portion of the MV95 form

You can request an inspection through any Montana sheriff’s office or at a Montana Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) office.

Registration and titling

Following the completion of Form MV95 Motor Home Inspection Certificate, the vehicle may be registered and titled as a motor home, subject to standard registration and titling fees.
