visitor.us provides a 40-day printable Montana Temporary Registration Permit (a temp tag) upon request, which will allow you to hit the road while your registration is in process.

You do not need to complete all of Step 2 - Your Vehicle to request your temp tag.

You can request your temp tag immediately after providing your vehicle's details.

After providing your vehicle's details in Step 2 - Your Vehicle, the Temporary Registration element will appear within the Step 3 - Temporary Registration step:

Temporary registration request

Click the Request a Temporary Tag button to request your vehicle's temp tag. You will see the following message:

  • Your temp tag will be valid for 40 days from the date of issuance - so don’t request one too long before you need it,

  • Temp tags are recognized throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico’s free zones (Baja, Sonora, Quintana Roo), but NOT outside those areas, and,

  • If you've been issued a temp tag by another party (e.g., the selling dealer), you should wait until the temp tag that you have been issued is within one week of expiration to request an additional temp tag from visitor.us.

We will generate your temp tag within one business day of your request and upload it to the visitor.us dashboard - you will receive an email notification when it is ready.

A Montana temp tag is a PDF file, so you can print it and attach it to the rear of your vehicle. Below is an example of a Montana temp tag:

After your vehicle is registered, you will not be able to request a temp tag.
