What costs are involved with buying a vehicle in the United States?

The largest cost of buying a vehicle is its "Sticker Price."  This is the advertised price of the vehicle, before taxes, fees, add-ons, and trade-in value.

When these additional costs are added to the Sticker Price, the result is known as the "Out-the-Door Price."

Example:

Sticker Price
$25,000
Dealer installed equipment
Trailer Hitch
$750
Dealer documentation fees*$800
Less: Trade-In Credit
($12,500)
Taxable Value$13,650
Sales tax (6%*)
$843
Registration Fees*$268
Out-the-Door Price$15,161
