A handful of US states don’t issue titles for vehicles over a certain age. One that we see most often is Vermont, a state that doesn’t issue titles for vehicles older than 15 years.
This is a short guide to transferring a vehicle whose ownership document is a Vermont Notice of Transfer of Ownership.
This is an example of the official Vermont ownership document for a vehicle older than 15 years:
Front
Rear
Images, copies, scans, or photos of this document are not accepted - in order to transfer ownership of the vehicle, the authentic document must be submitted.
The Vermont Notice of Transfer of Ownership must also be signed by all owners whose name(s) appear on the front of the document.
The name of the New owner (i.e., the buyer) must be written on the rear of the document, where indicated.
If the New owner (i.e., the buyer) is a visitor.us customer, we will form a Montana Limited Liability Company (LLC), owned by that person.
The name of the LLC (not the individual) must be written in blue or black ink on the Name (new owner) line.
The address of the LLC (not the individual) must be written in blue or black ink on the Name (new owner) line.
The selling price and date of transfer are not required or relevant for a Montana registration, although they may be written, if the seller and the buyer wish to document these items for their own records.
Write carefully: any cross-outs, write-overs, or white-outs may void the document and require a replacement.
