While Montana’s state sales tax for vehicles is set at 0%, Montana’s counties have the option to charge a 0.7% tax (the “Option Tax”) on a vehicle’s value upon registration. Most of Montana’s counties have exercised the option, and do charge the Option Tax.
visitor.us pays the Option Tax upon registration. This cost is built into our flat fee of $995; we do not charge extra for the Option Tax in most situations.
Montana also charges a “Luxury Vehicle Surcharge” of $825 on all light (non-motorhome) vehicles with a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $150,000 or more, and all motorhomes with an MSRP of $300,000 or more.
Due to these extra costs due for high-value vehicles, visitor.us reserves the right to charge an additional fee of 1.25% of the vehicle’s MSRP to register and renew registrations for light vehicles with an MSRP of $150,000 or more, and motorhomes with an MSRP of $300,000 or more.
