In order to register a vehicle in the United States, you need a photo identification.

The type of photo ID required depends on the state in which you register your vehicle.  (Vehicle registration in the US is handled by the States, not the Federal Government.)

The following states require a driver's license issued by that state - or a social security number - to register a vehicle:

  • Alabama
  • Arizona
  • Connecticut
  • Delaware
  • Georgia
  • Idaho
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Iowa
  • Kansas
  • Kentucky
  • Maryland
  • Nebraska
  • North Carolina
  • Ohio
  • Pennsylvania
  • Rhode Island
  • South Dakota
  • Washington State
  • Washington, D.C.
  • Wisconsin
