In order to sell your vehicle, you must assign your Montana title to the vehicle's new owner

If you wish to sell your vehicle, simply collect payment from the buyer and provide the buyer with your properly assigned Montana title.

In order to properly assign your Montana title, three things are required:

  • Complete the Seller's Section of the title in blue or black ink - but do not sign until you are in front of a Notary Public.
  • The odometer disclosure sub-section of the Seller's Section must be filled out for vehicles model year 2011 or newer.
  • The seller's (i.e., your) signature on a Montana title must be notarized for the vehicle's title to be properly assigned.

Because your vehicle is titled in the name of your Montana Limited Liability Company, you should visit a notary public complete the Seller's Section of the title as follows, to match the name on the face of your Montana Title

Signature of First Owner

Example LLC by John Doe, CEO

(Where Example LLC is the name of your Montana LLC, and John Doe is your signature.)

Wait to sign until you are in front of a notary, who will verify your identity and stamp/sign the Notary section of the title.

The buyer's details may be left blank - it does not need to be witnessed by the notary.

However, a signed and notarized title with the buyer's details left blank is an Open Title, meaning that it (and the vehicle) belongs to whoever possesses the title.

So, for security purposes, it's best to write the buyer's name and address, as well as the date of transfer and the odometer reading, in the Seller Completes in Ink section.

Before the buyer registers the vehicle, he or she will need to acknowledge the odometer reading (if the vehicle is model year 2011 or newer) by signing and printing his or her name in the section of the title marked Buyer.
